disappointed, disappointed

After having expanded my stay in Syria eventhough there were bombs falling in the neighborhood, i said farewell to my friends and got to Greece. I have never felt so happy to be back home. Sometimes i take things and people for granted, but now i must say the joy i feel of being home is really overwhelming.. at least for the moment.
I've spent my time packing and unpacking suitcases since june 28th.. a bit tired i must say, but it's going to keep on till september, and i'm not complaining. I'd rather do that than being stuck in a boring place all summer :)
I feel concerned about what's going on in the Middle-East, it angers me to see that everybody is talking about a ceasefire but there are no decisions being made.. it's always the same story.. wasn't it exactly the same with the war in Irak? i'd rather not start bitching otherwise it would never end, i just want to say that for the supposedly "Chosen" people of God, the Israelis arent exactly doing a good job. Oh no, wait, i forgot the hidden Commandments on the other side of the stone were "Thou shallst bomb thy neighbor", and "Thou shallst lie to the face of the world". BRAVO, GOD! Excellent choice! They're following your rules by the BOOK!
Is God American?

Enough irony now, the images of war make me cry, so i'm going to stop this subject right here.

NOW. I went to an island called Zakynthos for 4 days with some friends. I was expecting divine beaches and scenery, but i forgot one major detail: tourists. And to top it all, ENGLISH tourists. We didn't have the means to get to see the entire island, so we had to stay in the most touristic spots, which were the closest ones to where we were. it was very disappointing to see that traditional villages have turned into some sort of Disneyland villages.. i'm sorry, but my idea of a greek island isn't exactly that of Macdonald's and indian restaurants, billiard and bowling alleys, overcrowded beaches filled with watersports, which is actually dangerous for that area because the island is known to be protected territory for sea turtles that are going extinct. The first night we went out, we landed in this place which was a miniature Las Vegas, a street with blinking kitsch red neons on each side indicating bars and clubs, and english tourists shouting uber drunk in the street and showing their genitals at our camera. yum. Imagine, the local waitors were actually surprised to discover that we were Greek (5 ladies now..) and that, during our entire stay.. we would here "oh!!! you're Greek???" the entire time.
We got to some good places though, haha the good clubs were sorta hidden out of that tourist area, and were referred to as the clubs "where greeks go", and in general the group was great so we had a blast.
What surprised me is that i was able to draw a sort of parallel between the island and Syria, or Egypt for the fact. It all depends on if you're local or a stranger; taxi prices could go up to 10 euros more for tourists for instance, restaurants out of prices because they were destined to tourists, and so on. What in greek we would call KOROIDIA! But it's like that everywhere.. i was used to being played as a sucker when i lived in damascus and cairo, and it felt good for once to be on the other side. Especially with the English. Sorry, but those guys are pros when it comes to ruining our islands. All the drunken job they can't get done back home, they do here, and when they do, they act worse than animals. That's all i have to say. I witnessed it.

I should chose my destinations more carefully in the future..

ps: pictures are to be posted later.

Tourists are a great source of income, but it is true that tourism is the main factor in the destruction of the historical values it it based on.

However, I don't think that the people should give up progress just to retain their identity.
